Tile dimensions vary between manufacturers. Two products described as “standard” may still differ slightly, so always check the stated measurements before mixing sets.

Common materials

Acrylic tiles are hard-wearing, consistent and easy to clean. Melamine offers a traditional weight and sound. Ceramic tiles can feel more substantial and often carry hand-painted artwork, but colour and finish may vary slightly.

Size and readability

Larger tiles are easier to read across a table and often suit players who prefer a more tactile set. They also require larger racks, mats and storage. Smaller travel tiles are easier to carry but can feel less substantial during extended play.

Artwork and colour

Traditional tile systems rely on clear suit symbols and numbers. Stylised sets may use custom colours or patterns. For frequent play, make sure the suit markings remain easy to distinguish at a glance.

What to verify

Check tile count, dimensions, material, finish, rack compatibility and whether the set includes jokers, dice, a rule guide or a storage case.
