Mahjong Buying Guide: Sets, Tiles, Racks & Mats
A useful mahjong purchase starts with the style of game you play. Tile counts, rack sizes, mats and storage are easier to compare once that is clear.
1. Identify the mahjong style
- American mahjong: usually uses a larger tile set, racks, pushers and the current National Mah Jongg League card. Tile counts and joker requirements can change by year.
- Chinese mahjong: commonly uses a 144-tile set with dice and a suitable playing surface. Regional rules may add flowers, seasons or local scoring details.
- Riichi and other regional styles: may require different tile counts, indicator tiles, trays or scoring equipment.
2. Choose the tile format
Tile size affects readability, storage and rack compatibility. Larger tiles are easier to read but require more table space and larger racks or bags. Always compare the stated dimensions instead of relying on the word “standard”.
3. Compare materials
- Acrylic: durable, consistent, easy to clean and widely used for modern sets.
- Melamine: often has a traditional weight and sound.
- Ceramic or hand-decorated: offers more distinct artwork, but small variations in finish or design can be normal.
4. Match racks, pushers and mats
Racks must fit the tile height and width. Pushers help organise and move tiles. A playing mat protects the table, reduces noise and can make picking up tiles easier. Check whether these items are included or sold separately.
5. Plan storage before checkout
Measure the largest piece you need to carry. A tile bag may not fit a rack; a rack bag may not fit a full set; and a mat bag needs the correct folded or rolled dimensions. Travel sets may use smaller tiles and compact cases.
6. Confirm before ordering
- Tile count and whether jokers, dice or accessories are included.
- Exact tile, rack and mat dimensions.
- Material, colour and artwork variations.
- Whether the item is in stock, made to order or a special order.
- Shipping destination, duties and delivery expectations.
